Quebec police arrest 35 people in raids on pot clubs08 Jun 2010 Police raided five marijuana clubs in Montreal and Quebec City Thursday, arresting 35 people, including the founder of the federal Marijuana Party.Officers swept down on five of the "compassion clubs" -- which offer marijuana to those who need it for medical reasons -- and seized 35 kilograms of pot, $10,000 in cash and computer equipment. Police said the clubs -- four in Montreal and one in Quebec City -- were selling marijuana without a permit from Health Canada. Charges of trafficking, possession and conspiracy are expected to be laid against those arrested. "What police are alleging is that the administrators of the clubs and some of the volunteers were illegally handing out marijuana without permits from Health Canada," said CTV Montreal's Annie Demelt. |
